Length is about pixels, not just characters

Google truncates snippets by pixel width, not a fixed character count — which is why two descriptions of the same length can be cut differently. As a rule of thumb, titles display well up to ~600px (~60 characters) and descriptions up to ~920px (~155 characters). This tool tracks both so you can see exactly where your snippet would be clipped.

Write for the click, not the keyword

A meta description doesn't directly rank a page, but it heavily influences click-through rate from the results. The best descriptions summarize the page accurately, lead with the value, include the primary keyword naturally, and end with a reason to click.

Live SERP preview

As you type, the preview renders how your title, URL, and description would look in Google on desktop. Use it to catch truncation, awkward line breaks, and missed opportunities before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

What's the ideal meta description length?

Aim for roughly 120–155 characters (about 680–920 pixels). Long enough to be compelling, short enough to avoid truncation on most desktop results.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. Google often rewrites descriptions, and they aren't a ranking factor. But a strong description improves click-through rate, which matters for traffic.

Why does Google show a different description than mine?

Google may replace your meta description with text from the page if it better matches the user's query. Writing a clear, relevant description makes that less likely.

Should every page have a unique meta description?

Yes. Duplicate descriptions waste an opportunity to differentiate snippets and can look spammy. Write a distinct one for each important page.
