What makes a good URL slug

A good slug is short, lowercase, hyphen-separated, and readable as a phrase: /how-to-write-meta-descriptions beats /post?id=8231 in every result list. Google reads words in URLs as a minor relevance signal, and people read them before clicking, so a slug that states the topic earns trust in the SERP and in shared links.

Hyphens, stop words, and accents

Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as word joiners, which is why hyphens are the default here. Dropping stop words (a, the, of) keeps slugs tight without changing meaning. Accented characters get folded to their plain equivalents (café becomes cafe) so the URL survives copy-paste through any system that mangles non-ASCII characters.

Changing a slug on a live page

A slug change is a URL change: every existing link, share, and ranking points at the old address. If the page is already indexed, set a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one before you flip it, or leave a working slug alone. The best time to get a slug right is before publishing, which is what this tool is for.

Frequently asked questions

Hyphens. Google documents that it treats a hyphen as a word separator, so how-to-bake reads as three words, while how_to_bake can be read as one token. Every mainstream CMS defaults to hyphens for the same reason.

Aim for 3 to 6 meaningful words. Slugs carry a small relevance signal and get read by humans in results and shares, so include the primary keyword and cut everything that does not change the meaning, which is what the stop-word option automates.

Avoid dates unless the content is genuinely time-bound, like an event. A slug with /2024/ in it makes the page look stale in 2026 even after you update the content, and changing it later requires a redirect. Numbers that are part of the topic, like a listicle count, are fine.

No, nothing is sent anywhere. Slug generation runs entirely in your browser, so titles for unpublished pages stay private.
