Why alt text is worth automating
Alt text serves three audiences at once: screen-reader users hear it, search engines index images by it, and browsers show it when an image fails to load. Most sites either skip it or stuff keywords into it; both hurt. A vision model describes what is actually in the frame in seconds, which turns the chore into a review step instead of a writing task.
What good alt text looks like
Lead with the subject, describe what matters in context, and stop around 125 characters, the point where some screen readers historically cut off. Skip openers like "image of" (the alt attribute already says it is an image) and skip keyword lists. "Barista pouring latte art in a sunlit cafe" does more for accessibility and image SEO than "coffee, cafe, barista, latte".
When to leave alt text empty
Decorative images, spacers, and purely visual flourishes should carry an empty alt attribute (alt="") so screen readers skip them instead of announcing noise. The rule of thumb: if removing the image loses information, describe it; if nothing is lost, silence it.
